Welles Wilder Summation

The Welles Sum is the Welles Wilder method of creating the moving sum of a data series. Each value is the sum of the last n periods. Welles designed his formula to be easily computed by hand or with a simple calculator. The numbers will vary slightly from a simple (arithmetic) sum. For consistency with the original formulas, the Welles Sum is used in the calculation of Welles Wilder’s indicators (DI, DX, ADX, ADXR).
